dementia awareness 2024

World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign that takes place every year in September. People from around the world unite to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.

This month the theme is:

“Time to act on Dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer’s”

So what is different about dementia as opposed to natural ageing? According to the Alzheimer’s Society website:

As people get older, they are likely to notice some changes in their mental abilities. Though these changes can be frustrating, they are a natural part of ageing.

Dementia is not a normal part of getting older.

When a person has dementia, this worsening in mental abilities is much more serious. For a health professional to diagnose dementia, a person's symptoms must be significantly affecting their daily life. This means having difficulties with completing daily tasks about the house, in the community or at work.”

So why is a hearing dispenser writing a blog about Dementia?

Brain health and hearing are linked.

We are beginning to get to grips with why and how, but research is still ongoing. What we do know, is that treating a hearing loss will keep someone mentally active and socially engaged. This will support a full and enriched life.

If a hearing loss is not treating with suitable, good fitting hearing aids, a person can become socially isolated, and they can withdraw. This increases the risk of poor brain health and may contribute to the onset of dementia.

This can be a sensitive and emotive topic, and we understand the feelings of apprehension around finding out more. Here at Lakeland Hearing, both of our highly qualified and experienced Audiologists, Vicky and Madeleine, have attended Phonak’s Enhancing Cognitive Health with Hearing Optimisation (ECHHO) Training Course and would be very happy to talk to you more about the subject.
